Gresley Old Hall
Swadlincote, Derbyshire
OVERVIEW
Gresley Old Hall is a Grade II listed derelict building with many ghost stories trapped behind these cold and chilling walls. Built on the site of a former priory dating back to the 1100s, the spirits of this 16th Century haunted house await you, from a ghostly Victorian maid to a terrifying monk. What will you experience as you enter Gresley Old Hall?
HISTORY
Gresley was originally a Saxon settlement, with the name 'Gresele' being recorded in the Domesday Book (1086). This name is of Old English, possibly meaning a gravel area around woods.
The historic site can be dated back to 1135 AD, where the old Church Gresley Priory once stood. It was a place believed to be home of Augustinian Canons, and built by William de Gresley, the son of Nigel de Stafford. The priory remained in use until 1536 when King Henry VIII ordered for the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
Church Gresley Priory was acquired by Sir Christopher Alleyne in 1556, who reused some of the limestone from the priory to build Gresley Old Hall. Some of the features from the original construction can be found in the West wing, the stone foundations and the chimney. The Flemish gables were added on some time in the late 17th Century, and the rest of the Old Hall was completed by about 1734.
In 1795, Sir Nigel Bowyer Gresley of Drakelow Hall started a Fine China company, with the business and factory production taking place inside the Old Hall. They made many pieces of earthenware, but the business was unfortunately unsuccessful, and so for the best part of the 1800s it became a farmhouse and was tenanted to families. On some of the walls, Victorian graffiti can still be seen from the residents who once lived in this place.
In 1953, the Old Hall was bought by the Coal Board who turned parts of the building and the adjacent one into a Miners Welfare Club, which opened in 1964. Today, Gresley Old Hall stands frozen in time; abandoned and long forgotten.
GHOSTS & HAUNTINGS
Gresley Old Hall is reputedly haunted by a few ghosts who are hidden inside this historic and derelict house.
The ghost of a Victorian maid has been seen and captured on camera walking the creaky floorboards. The story goes that she was looking after the Lord and Lady's children, when a fire broke out in one of the rooms. She got the children out, but became trapped in the inferno and burned to her death. It's said her ghost remains in the building, and the smell of burning flesh lingers in the air whenever she appears.
Another ghost is that of a Monk, whose activities are recorded into the fabric of the building. The limestone from the old priory was reused to building this Old Hall, and limestone is a great conductor of energy. Will he make his holy presence known?
An angry male spirit is also reported to haunt this location, more so in the Attic spaces. There's a story that says a man was repeatedly stabbed in that area, and died shortly after. People have reported seeing bloodstains manifesting on the wooden floorboards, and then disappearing. Is this the gentleman replaying his final moments alive as his blood (and soul) was leaving his body?
Other paranormal activity reported here include loud taps and footsteps, groans and eerie whispers, crosses moving on their own, investigators getting touched by unseen hands, light anomalies and orbs, plus a little girl has been sensed a few times by other investigation teams.
