Peterborough Museum
Peterborough, Cambridgeshire
OVERVIEW
Peterborough Museum is a former Georgian Mansion that is renowned for being the most haunted building in the city of Peterborough. Complete with multiple floors of historic and spooky galleries where the ghost of a Roman Soldier and the infamous 'Lonely Anzac' Soldier haunt, as well as the terrifying Priestgate Vaults underneath where shadowy monks and disembodied voices are reported. Dare you venture into Peterborough's dark past?
HISTORY
Peterborough Museum is a Georgian building that was built originally as a private residence in 1816. Prior to this building, an older and much larger house stood on this site called 'Neville Place'. It was the home of the Orme family and dated as far back as 1536, before it was demolished in 1815. All that remains of this former Tudor House is the cellars beneath the Museum, now known as the Priestgate Vaults, which features original stone walls and rooms, including the old wine cellar. The Vaults were also used by local priests and monks to lead mass, prayers and communion in secret, as they went into hiding during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, and again amidst the English Civil War.
From 1815, the Tudor House was bought by the Cooke family headed by local magistrate Thomas Alderson Cooke. He had the house demolished and rebuilt from the ground up into the grand Georgian Priestgate Mansion we still see today. When Thomas died in 1854, the Priestgate Mansion was acquired by Earl Fitzwilliam in 1856, who granted permission for the building to be converted into a public dispensary and infirmary, which became Peterborough's first hospital. The Infirmary was officially opened in 1857 and remained as such until 1928 when the War Memorial Hospital opened. It was here in this building that the first X-ray machine in England was built outside of London. It was constructed within a year of X-rays being discovered by Alfred Caleb Taylor, who ironically died later in life in 1927 due to the over-exposure of them.
During the First World War, soldiers who were wounded from battle were brought back over to English shores. One of these soldiers was an Australian gentleman called Thomas Hunter. Thomas was born in County Durham, but spent the majority of his life down under in Australia, until the War kicked off and he was called to fight. Thomas suffered severe bullet wounds in his leg and spine during the Battle of the Somme, and once his wounds were dressed, he was sent back to England on a hospital train to recover at an advanced military hospital in Halifax, Yorkshire. However his condition worsened and instead he was stopped off at Peterborough Station and was brought to the Infirmary in Peterborough, where he was lifted up on a stretcher by a pulley system where the Main Staircase is today, and taken to the operating theatre. Sadly his wounds were too great and Thomas died here in the Museum on the 31st July 1916. A funeral procession was paid for him, and he is forever known by the locals as ' The Lonely Anzac'.
In 1931, the infirmary was converted yet again and became Peterborough Museum, ran by the Peterborough Museum Society. It was then took over by Peterborough City Council in 1968, and while still owned by the Council, today the Museum is now managed by the Vivacity Trust.
GHOSTS & HAUNTINGS
Peterborough Museum is reputedly said to be the most haunted building in all of Peterborough, with spiritual energies attached to artefacts in the Museum, various paranormal activity taken place, and ghostly beings connected to the location's past.
The spirit of Thomas Hunter (aka 'The Lonely Anzac') has been reported throughout the building, but primarily he's seen on the Main Staircase and in the Victorian Operating Theatre, with bandages around his leg and back. Thomas did die inside this building, and so it's possible he resides here because it was the last moment of his life.
A ghostly Roman Soldier dressed in full armour has been sensed and seen manifest in the Archaeology Gallery. It's believed his ghost is attached to a particular artefact in the room, and he comes in visitation standing by the exhibit and looking around, as if trying to search for his missing belonging he had in life.
Down underground in the Priestgate Vaults, shadowy Monks are seen walking around the long tunnel and at the doorways of rooms, with many hearing disembodied voices, footsteps, groans and chanting. A Black Dog has also been reported down in the Vaults, with light anomalies scaring those who witness them.
In the Jurassic, Ice Age and Wildlife Galleries, the spirit of a Little Girl has been seen by visitors and members of staff. She is dressed in White and Yellow clothing and skips around the rooms, with people even hearing her giggle. Is she connected to the Orme family or the Cooke family?
Upstairs on the Second Floor, cold spots and quick-moving shadows are often felt and seen, especially in the Napoleonic Gallery, while in the Changing Lives In Peterborough Gallery and the hidden corridor behind it where the secret Servants' Staircase is, the spirit of a Young Maid roams, wanting everyone to know the true story of how she was killed.
Further reported paranormal activity includes the slamming of doors when no one is around, objects being moved despite locked behind glass cases. With so many prevalent hauntings, what will you experience after dark at Peterborough Museum?
