Holme Pierrepont Hall
Holme Pierrepont, Nottinghamshire
OVERVIEW
Holme Pierrepont Hall is a Grade I listed Tudor Hall that lies south of the River Trent in Nottinghamshire. Built in 1500 by Sir William Pierrepont during the reign of King Henry VIII, the house is currently occupied by the descendants of the Pierrepont family dating back to the Norman Conquest. Holme Pierrepont Hall is one of our team's favourite ghost hunting locations, from spectral sightings of men and women seen in period clothing to divine voices of the past that will send chills down your spine. Dare you join us here when dusk falls?
HISTORY
Holme Pierrepont Hall is the current family home of the Brackenbury family, who are direct descendants of the Pierreponts. The Pierreponts came over with William the Conqueror in 1066 during the Norman Conquest, but didn't settle in Nottinghamshire until 1280, when Sir Henry de Pierrepont married Annora de Manvers, the sixth generation of the de Manvers to live here at Holme, which later became Holme Pierrepont. This indicates that the de Manvers were living at Holme since at least 1100 AD.
The Hall seen today dates back to the Tudor period as early as 1500, with later additions and alterations made since that time. Holme Pierrepont Hall is one of the most significant and historically important country houses in the Midlands, one because it's the earliest bricked building in the region, and two because of the incredibly noble family members associated with it: Sir Robert de Pierrepont (d. 1334) fought against Robert the Bruce under King Edward I and then became Governor of Newark Castle under his son Edward II, Sir Henry Pierrepont (d. 1452) fought for the Yorkists in the Wars of the Roses, and his nephew Sir William Pierrepont (d. 1534) who built the present day Hall, are just some key Pierrepont figures who have made their mark on English history. Plus there were many late descendants who were granted both Earldom and Dukedom.
Other notable figures connected to the Hall, include Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (née Pierrepont) (1689-1765) who was a controversial writer who taught herself Latin when she stayed at Thoresby Hall, Henry Pierrepont, 1st Marquess of Dorchester (1606-1680) who was a violent bad tempered man involved with politics during the English Civil War, studying medicine and law later in his life, the notorious Duchess of Kingston-upon-Hull, Elizabeth Chudleigh (1721-1788) who married Evelyn Pierrepont, 2nd Duke of Kingston-upon-Hull, but was later found guilty of Bigamy having married another man in secret years before, Georgina Brackenbury (1865-1949) who was a renowned artist and later militant suffragette, and Marie-Louise Roosevelt Pierrepont (1889-1984) who was the last person to have the title Countess Manvers, and was also a recognised artist.
The house went through plenty of changes over the five centuries, with extensions and renovations made relevant to the time period. The Pierrepont name in Nottinghamshire would last for roughly 700 years, until the end of the 18th Century when it died out. Ownership of the estate went through the female line, and so surnames changed.
During both World Wars, the Hall and estate was used as a training camp for young soldiers preparing to fight on the frontline, and some are said to have died during training exercises.
GHOSTS & HAUNTINGS
Holme Pierrepont Hall is one of Nottinghamshire's most haunted historic houses. Many people were born inside this Hall, and many people died inside this Hall.
It's not surprising that there has been lots of paranormal activity reported at Holme Pierrepont Hall.
Several ghostly apparitions of men and women dressed in various period clothing have been seen throughout the house, wandering around the rooms and corridors, before vanishing into thin air. Are these past family members of the Pierreponts who come back to this house in visitation?
Disembodied voices echo down the hallways and are also heard in the Long Gallery, with a darker and uneasy presence being felt in the old Medieval Lodgings, said to be a male spirit from the Elizabethan era.
Phantom footsteps are heard pacing up and down in the Tudor and Victorian Bedrooms, with no logical explanation, and the strange sounds of horses are sometimes heard in the Hall's Courtyard Garden and in the surrounding parkland.
On a previous investigation here at Holme Pierrepont Hall, the Brookes Paranormal team were joined by Medium Ian Lawman from Help! My House Is Haunted, and we encountered some eerie spirits and plenty of amazing paranormal activity, with some of the most incredible table tipping in the Tudor Bedroom.
